Aluminium Sulphate
The Nienburg site has decades of experience in the production of solid and liquid aluminium sulphate. Through high quality raw materials, decades of experience which has optimised the production process as well as regular quality controls, the standard product meets the stringent requirements for drinking water treatment chemicals (DIN EN 878, type 1, iron-free).
Furthermore, it is also possible to produce solid aluminium sulphate in pharmaceutical quality in accordance with Ph.Eur., BP and USP as well as in food quality in accordance with the provisions of the Regulation on requirements for additives and marketing of additives for technological purposes (ZVerkV) in conjunction with the EC Directive 2008/84/EC.
Aluminium sulphate is used primarily as an electrolyte in colloidal systems as coagulant and fixative, as fabrication agent in tanneries (“alum tannage”, “white tannage”) and as pickling agent in the textile industry.
The primary applications are:
- Drinking water treatment
- Industrial and municipal wastewater treatment
- Pulp & Paper industry
- Sugar industry
- Leather industry
- Textile industry
- Building chemistry
As a typical application of aluminium sulphate as a fixative in the paper industry, the widely used resin sizing is also relevant to mention. The resin glue particles are fixed on the fibre surface by the dissociated aluminium sulphate and parallel to this the in the solution contained Al3+ ions react with resinate ions to form aluminium resinate.
Al3+ + 3 C19H29COO- --> Al(C19H29COO)3
Falsely aluminium sulphate is still referred to as alum. Under alums one understands in general compounds of the type MIMIII(SO4)2 • 12 H2O.
